    If your Surface Book 2 is not turning on, you may see a black screen with no Surface logo, or nothing happens when you press the power button, or the Surface just seems to be off in a power-saving state.

    You may need to check the battery or see if the power light comes on when connected to a power supply, otherwise try the solutions below.

  • 1. General troubleshooting

    The first things to check for when your Surface Book 2 is not turning on is the battery and charging. Check also for any damage on the charging port, the power connector or power cord. Ensure the connections are secure and nothing is plugged in to the USB charging port on power supply.

    The Surface is designed to work best with power supply included. You can also do the following:

    2. Press the power button once

    This should turn on your Surface or wake it from sleep. It’s normal for your Surface to take several seconds to start up or wake from sleep. Try waiting a bit to see if it responds. If it turns on, charge the battery until it has at least a 40 percent charge, then install the latest Surface and Windows updates.

    3. Wake your Surface with hotkeys

    You can try and wake your Surface using a special keyboard shortcut. To do this:

    4. Force a restart

    Whenever possible, shut down your Surface normally. Go to Start >Power>Shut down or press and hold the power button until the Slide to shut down your PC screen appears (about 4 seconds), and then slide down.

    If that doesn’t work, press and hold down the power button until your Surface restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (this takes about 20 seconds), then release the power button, to make sure your Surface completely turns off.

    If your Surface turns on after you force a shut down and restart: Charge the battery until it has at least a 40 percent charge, then install the latest Surface and Windows updates.

    If your Surface still won’t turn on, it may need service. Start a service request by going to Device service and repair on Microsoft support site.

    5. Install updates

    Before you install any updates, do the following:

    Note: When a Surface firmware update is available, you’ll see a notification on your Surface. Follow the instructions to update your Surface Book 2 using Windows Updates.

    You can download and install updates manually, if you have an internet connection. You can also use another computer with internet access if you are having trouble connecting your Surface to WiFi by downloading the .msi file to a USB driver then transferring to your Surface Book 2.
