Surface Book 2 is not turning on? Heres how to get it back up

The Surface Book 2 device is one of a kind, in fact, it is touted as the most powerful Surface ever, what with four times more power than before and up to 17 hours battery life.

Other features that make this the ultimate laptop for running powerful apps include its quad-core powered Intel Core processors, best graphics performance with the latest NVidia GeForce GPUs, and so much more for you to use at work or on the go.

It is lightweight and powerful plus has a backlit keyboard and a display designed for touch and Surface Pen. However, because the Surface Book 2 uses a lithium-ion battery, it means the amount of time it lasts varies depending on what you do with your Surface.

If your Surface Book 2 is not turning on, you may see a black screen with no Surface logo, or nothing happens when you press the power button, or the Surface just seems to be off in a power-saving state.

You may need to check the battery or see if the power light comes on when connected to a power supply, otherwise try the solutions below.

FIX: Surface Book 2 not turning on

1. General troubleshooting

The first things to check for when your Surface Book 2 is not turning on is the battery and charging. Check also for any damage on the charging port, the power connector or power cord. Ensure the connections are secure and nothing is plugged in to the USB charging port on power supply.

The Surface is designed to work best with power supply included. You can also do the following:

• Switch to the Surface power connector.If your Surface has a USB-C port and you use it to charge the device, switch to the Surface power connector that came with your Surface to help it charge faster.
• Check the power connector light, if the LED light on the power connector is turned on or not. If the light is off you may need to replace your power supply. If the light is flashing, remove the power connector from your Surface and check again for damage or debris that could cause a bad connection. If the light continues to flash, replace the power supply.

2. Press the power button once

This should turn on your Surface or wake it from sleep. It’s normal for your Surface to take several seconds to start up or wake from sleep. Try waiting a bit to see if it responds. If it turns on, charge the battery until it has at least a 40 percent charge, then install the latest Surface and Windows updates.

3. Wake your Surface with hotkeys

You can try and wake your Surface using a special keyboard shortcut. To do this:

• If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key  + Ctrl+Shift+B.
• In tablet mode, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons three times in quick succession (within two seconds).

You should hear a short beep while Windows tries to refresh the screen. If your Surface still won’t turn on, try the next solution.

4. Force a restart

Expert Tip: Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. Whenever possible, shut down your Surface normally. Go to Start >Power>Shut down or press and hold the power button until the Slide to shut down your PC screen appears (about 4 seconds), and then slide down.

• Press and hold the power button until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release the power button.
• Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Microsoft logo.

If that doesn’t work, press and hold down the power button until your Surface restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (this takes about 20 seconds), then release the power button, to make sure your Surface completely turns off.

If your Surface turns on after you force a shut down and restart: Charge the battery until it has at least a 40 percent charge, then install the latest Surface and Windows updates.

If your Surface still won’t turn on, it may need service. Start a service request by going to Device service and repair on Microsoft support site.

5. Install updates

Before you install any updates, do the following:

• Plug your Surface into a working power outlet before installing updates. Don’t unplug or turn off your Surface while it’s updating.
• Make sure your Surface is charged to at least 40 percent before beginning to install updates.
• If you have a Surface Typing Cover or Surface docking station, make sure they’re attached before you turn on your Surface so they get the latest updates, too.
• If you use mobile broadband to connect to the Internet, your connection is automatically set to metered. Windows updates may not download over a metered connection, so it’s best to connect to Wi-Fi to make sure you get all updates.
• If you have no other connection options or have an unlimited data plan, you can change turn off the Set as metered connection When this setting is off, all updates over your mobile broadband connection.

Update the Surface Book 2 and Windows and ensure all updates are completely installed.

Note: When a Surface firmware update is available, you’ll see a notification on your Surface. Follow the instructions to update your Surface Book 2 using Windows Updates.

You can download and install updates manually, if you have an internet connection. You can also use another computer with internet access if you are having trouble connecting your Surface to WiFi by downloading the .msi file to a USB driver then transferring to your Surface Book 2.

6. Clean the connectors

Try and clean the connectors between the clipboard and keyboard. to do this:

• Detach the Clipboard from the keyboard.
• Clean the pins on the connector with a pencil eraser, rubbing back and forth across the pins.
• Wet a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol, then clean the pins on the long, narrow part of the charger that you plug into your Surface.
• Rub the cotton swab back and forth across the pins.
• Once you’re done, make sure that the pins are dry, and then reattach the Clipboard to the keyboard.
