SOLVED: Xbox mic is really quiet

  • Check and clean your Xbox hardware
  • Check the headphones on another device
  • Test your Xbox One Chat Headset
  • Use Skype to test the headset
  • Change to Energy saver
  • Check Xbox profile settings
  • Check mic through Sign in
  • Power cycle your Xbox
  • Other things to take into consideration
  • Solution 1: Check and clean your Xbox hardware

The first thing you should check is if the hardware part is physically damaged. To do this, follow these simple steps:

  • Examine the headset, the cord, and the connector to check if you see visible defects
  • Make sure that no dirt is set on the headset connector. You could also try to clean the connector using a cotton pad dipped in rubbing alcohol.
  • Firmly insert the Xbox One Chat Headset connector into the expansion port under the directional pad and the right stick on the controller
  • Solution 2: Check the headphones on another device

In order to also make sure the problem is not hardware related and only pertains to the settings, you can plug the controller to another Xbox device and see if the voice is registered using the mic in that system.

Solution 3: Test your Xbox One Chat Headset

To test the headset, start a party in order to test the audio:

  • Sign in to Xbox Live on your Xbox One console
  • Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  • Select Start a party (Note: You do not need to invite anyone for this test)
  • Make sure the volume is turned up.
  • Speak into the microphone.
  • If your headset is working, you will see the ring around your gamerpic light up.

Solution 4: Use Skype to test the headset

You can use the Skype app to test your headset. Below you can find out exactly how to do that:

  • Sign in to your account.
  • Select the Skype app
  • Choose People, and then select the Skype Test Call contact.
  • Select Voice call and Skype will try to connect your voice call
  • The call will ask you to speak into the mic and will repeat what was heard.
  • Solution 5: Change to Energy saver

Expert Tip: Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having troubles fixing an error, your system may be partially broken. We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and identify what the fault is.

There are two power-on modes on Xbox: Energy Saving and Instant-on . In Energy saving, Xbox One requires you to power on the console and it might take up to 45 seconds before the console powers up completely. This mode takes a lot less power and users reported that it fixed the mic problem on many consoles so it might worth giving it a try:

  • Open Xbox One’s settings and navigate to Power and Startup
  • Under the Power options, highlight the Power mode and use the button ‘A’ on your controller to toggle to Energy-saving
  • Save the changes and exit
  • Solution 6: Check Xbox profile settings

You should also check if you have correctly set your Xbox communication settings as there are some options  that could limit your voice communication:

  • press the Xbox button on your controller
  • select Settings and then All Settings from the list of options
  • go to Account using the left navigation pane and click Privacy and online safety
  • Select Adult defaults and click on View details and customize
  • in Communicate with voice and text, select Specific friends or everybody, depending on who you want that profile to talk to.
  • Solution 7: Check mic through Sign in

Another workaround that was registered as a success for many users was checking the mic after choosing a person. It seems that the system needs to confirm you are using the controller that is currently active. You can manually create a connection between the controller and your profile by using the instructions listed below:

  • Go to the Home of Xbox One
  • Navigate to the Sign-in
  • Select Choose this person
  • After selecting your person which you have already created in Xbox, check your mic after joining any party
  • Solution 8: Power cycle your Xbox

Power cycling is the act of turning off a device completely and then turn it on again. Thus, the electronic device will reinitialize its set of configurations parameters or will recover from an unresponsive state. Another reason for this procedure is that it resets all the network configurations and connections with all connected devices/controllers. If you want to try this solution as well, please follow the steps described below:

  • Press the Xbox button on your controller for a few seconds to turn off the controller completely without removing the headphones
  • Click the Xbox button on Xbox One to turn it off
  • After all the modules are turned off, take out the power cable of Xbox One
  • Leave everything as it is for approximately 5 minutes
  • Turn everything back on and check if your mic is working properly
  • Solution 9: Other things to take into consideration

There are also other things you should take into consideration and check in order to solve this issue and, exactly like in the case of the solutions described above, it does not require you to be a tech savvy user. Please check them out even though they might seem really obvious and easy:

  • Make sure that the controllers and Xbox One are updated to the latest build available
  • Check the controller’s batteries – many users claimed that inserting new batteries and ensuring they were tightly in place fixed the problem
  • Make sure you are using a headset which is compatible with Xbox One
  • Increase the volume level: go to Settings, choose Devices & accessories, and then select Mic monitoring to adjust the mic volume.
  • Did any of these solutions helped you solve your problem and now the mic works properly? Please let us know your thoughts on this in the section below.
